The Guide to Installing iHelios Infrared Heating: How to Calculate Materials

iHelios infrared electric heating film calculation.

Infrared heating is different from traditional systems. It uses infrared radiation to heat objects and people directly. In contrast, traditional systems warm the air in the room. This can lead to more uniform heating and potential energy savings.

If you're considering installing a iHelios infrared heating film, understanding how to calculate the necessary materials is crucial for a successful installation. Here's a comprehensive guide to help you through the process. We are more than happy to create free calculation for you

Step 1: Assess Your Heating Requirements

Before you start calculating the materials, you need to determine the heating requirements of your space. Consider the following factors:

  • Room Size: Measure the length, width, and height of the room to calculate the total volume.
  • Insulation Quality: Assess the quality of insulation in the walls, floor, and ceiling. Better insulation reduces the heating power needed.
  • Window Area: Calculate the total area of windows in the room, as windows can significantly impact heat loss.
  • Occupancy: Think about how many people use the room and what they do, as this influences the need for heat.

Step 2: Calculate the Heating Load

The heating load is the amount of heat energy an electric heater needs. This energy keeps your space at a comfortable temperature.

It is typically measured in watts (W). Use the following formula to estimate the heating load:

Heating Load (W)=Room Volume (m3)×Heating Factor (W/m3)

The heating factor depends on the insulation quality and can range from:

  • Poor Insulation: 30-40 W/m³
  • Average Insulation: 20-30 W/m³
  • Good Insulation: 10-20 W/m³

For example, for a room with average insulation and a volume of 60 m³:

Heating Load=60m3×25W/m3=1500W

Step 3: Determine the infrared heating film installation length

iHelios infrared heating film comes in various sizes and wattages.

  • iHelios iH403 30cm width 66 Watts placement in ceiling between 40cm joists
  • iHelios iH405 50cm width 110 watts placement in ceiling between 60cm joists
  • iHelios iH410 1m width 140-220 watts placed as underfloor for laminate, engineered and wooden floors

Choose film based on the calculated heating load and the installation placement

For Floor cover 80% of your floor area as we don't like cold spots under our feet

For Ceilings calculate as below:

  • To find out how many meters of film you need, divide the total heating load by the wattage of the film type you chose.

For example - if your heating load is 1500 W and you choose iH405 110W:

Film required=1500 W/110W =13.6lm

Calculating Power: To calculate how much power you need divide total heating load by voltage (V)

For example - 1500W / 240V = 6.25A

If your required power exceeds 16A you must use two thermostats or install a contactor.

Placement: Cut heating film into pieces which will be at least 200mm away from the wall at both ends.

  •  Distribute the film evenly across the room for uniform heating. Ensure there are no obstructions that could block the infrared radiation.

.Step 4: Calculate Additional Materials

Aside from the heating Film, you'll need various materials for the installation:

  • Reflective insulation
  • Gateway
  • Thermostats help control the temperature in your home. Choose the right thermostats for your needs. Count how many you need based on the number of rooms or areas. One thermostat can cover up to 16A of power.
  • Wiring and Electrical Components: Determine how long the wiring needs to be. Identify the type of wiring required to connect the film to the power source. Ensure compatibility with your electrical system.
  • Occupancy sensor: to control your heating automatically
