Historic Mill Conversion with Invisible Infrared Heating
This historic mill conversion required a modern heating solution that would provide comfortable room temperatures without compromising the building’s original character.
The property features exposed brick walls, original timber beams, large open-plan spaces and high ceilings.
iHelios infrared heating film was installed discreetly behind selected wall and ceiling finishes, allowing the building surfaces themselves to provide radiant heat without visible radiators, boilers or heating pipework.
The project
The project involved upgrading a former industrial mill to provide modern thermal comfort while retaining its historic appearance.
Original exposed brickwork, substantial timber beams, tall ceilings and open-plan interiors were central to the character of the building.
The heating system therefore needed to remain visually discreet and avoid intrusive pipe routes, radiator positions or major structural alterations.
The selected solution transformed selected wall and ceiling surfaces into low-temperature radiant heat emitters.
Why conventional heating was unsuitable
Traditional convection heating was not well suited to the scale and form of the building.
In rooms with high ceilings, warm air naturally rises and can accumulate above the occupied area. This can lead to uneven comfort, slower warm-up and unnecessary heating of the upper air volume.
Wall-mounted radiators would also have interrupted the exposed brickwork, reduced usable wall space and required visible pipework or boxing.
Wet underfloor heating was not selected because the required floor build-up and structural work would have affected the existing construction.

The fully electric design is also ready to operate alongside renewable electricity, solar PV and battery storage.
